John (Jack) Henry Hammon (SN 3333) from Havelock Street, was born in Ballarat and was a single 32 year old grocer when he enlisted in Liverpool, NSW, on July 18th 1915. He was posted to 4th Infantry Battalion and left Australia in October 1915 from Sydney, on board the Port Lincoln. Transferred to 56th Battalion in February 1916, arriving in France in March, he served for a time with the Australian Army Provost Corps. He was wounded in July at Pozieres, France. He recovered from his wounds and continued to serve until he was killed in action near Harbonnieres on August 23rd 1918 at age 35 and is buried in the Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France.
His brothers Harry and Norman also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Jack H. Hammon.
