Biography

Norman Coates Hammon (SN 962) born in Creswick, was a 20 year old grocer when he enlisted at Ballarat on February 5th 1915. He embarked aboard the Ulysses on May 8th and sailed to Egypt. He then served at Gallipoli with the 22nd Infantry Battalion from early September until the evacuation in December. In March 1916 he reached France where he served with the 6th Machine Gun Company. In October 1917 he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his ankle and was evacuated to England. He was unable to return to the battlefield and was returned to Australia aboard the Kashmir. He disembarked at Melbourne on April 30th 1919 and was discharged on June 29th.

His brothers John and Harry also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
