Norman Hugh Jones was a single 26 year old area officer when he enlisted on the 1st of June 1917 and a 2nd Lieutenant in the Australian Flying Corps. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on the 4th of August 1917. He returned to Australia on the 5th of September 1919 and was discharged on the 5th of October 1919 due to the termination of his period of enlistment.
