Biography

Norman Hugh Jones (Lt.) was born in Ballarat where he was the 26 year old Area Officer with the 70th Infantry when he joined the AIF on June 1st 1917. He undertook a three-month aviation course at Laverton before embarking on August 4th as a 2nd lieutenant with the Australian Flying Corps. In England he trained then qualified as a flying officer (observer) then served in that role with No.3 Squadron. When the war ended, he was granted three months leave to allow him to take up a placement with a Scottish textile company. He then returned home on the Prinz Ludwig, disembarked at Melbourne on September 5th 1919 and his appointment was terminated on October 5th.

His brothers Harold and half brother Oswald also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
