Oswald Thomas Jones (SN 6048) born at Ballarat, was an 18 year old bank clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne on January 10th 1916. On July 28th he embarked aboard the Themistocles and in October he reached France attached to the 46th Infantry Battalion. In December he was transferred to the 8th Battalion with whom he served for the remainder of the war. It appears that he avoided battle wounds but was hospitalised due to illness on several occasions. In June 1917, while in France, he was disciplined for being in a café during prohibited hours. When the war ended, he returned to Australia aboard the Euripides, disembarked at Melbourne on October 20th 1919 and was discharged on December 4th.

His half brothers Norman and Harold also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
