Biography

Benjamin Carlyle Berry (SN 229/924/Lt.) was born at Bendigo and was a 21 year old clerk when he enlisted in Sydney on October 17th 1914. He embarked just a few days later aboard the Euripides, attached to the 3rd Infantry Battalion. On July 11th 1915 he was wounded at Gallipoli, suffering a minor head wound, then wounded again two weeks later when burned by a shell. He was evacuated to hospital in Malta but was able to rejoin his unit a month later. He moved on to France in June 1916 and in August was promoted to lieutenant three days before being wounded for a third time, although he was able to remain on duty. After the war he embarked from England on July 6th 1919 aboard the Boorara and returned to Australia. He was discharged on February 2nd 1920.

His brothers Graham and William also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
