Biography

Joshua Joseph Dial (SN 1089) born at Allendale, was a 19 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 11th 1915. He embarked aboard the Persia on August 10th and served the last two months of the Gallipoli campaign with the 4th Light Horse Regiment. After Gallipoli he served in the Middle East, avoiding major wounds or illness, but not without some health complications. He returned to Australia aboard the Essex, disembarked at Melbourne on July 25th 1919 and was discharged ‘medically unfit, loss of power in right arm’ on November 16th.

His brother George was killed in France in July 1916 and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
