Biography

William Lindsey (SN 4244) was born at Allendale and was a 25 year old labourer when he first enlisted in Melbourne on September 14th 1914 but two months later he was discharged for drunkenness. He enlisted again on July 14th 1915 and joined the 14th Infantry Battalion, embarking for active service on December 29th, first to Egypt and then on to France. In December 1916 he was withdrawn to hospital in England suffering with trench foot, but was able to rejoin his unit in March 1917. Just a month later, on April 11th 1917 he was reported as missing and it was not until June that official word was received that he was a prisoner of war in Germany, where he remained until the war ended. After his release he arrived back in London on December 31st 1918. He returned to Australia on the Derbyshire and was discharged on June 6th 1919. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number V4522.

His brother Robert was killed in action on May 3rd 1915. His brothers George, Ernest and Isaac also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as William Lindsay.
