George Lindsey (SN 316) born at Allendale, was a 20 year old tinsmith when he enlisted in Ballarat on August 18th 1914. He embarked aboard the Benalla on October 19th and sailed via Albany to Egypt. With the 8th Infantry Battalion, he took part in the Gallipoli landing of April 25th 1915 at which he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his foot. He was evacuated to hospital in Egypt and then returned to Australia aboard the Ulysses. He disembarked at Melbourne on September 30th and was discharged on April 17th 1916 ‘medically unfit, wounded’. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number V18517.
His brother Robert was killed in action on May 3rd 1915. His brothers William, Ernest and Isaac also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
