Jack Tar Fishwick (SN 8838) born in Ballarat, was a 21 year old drover when he enlisted at Cootamundra, NSW, on August 26th 1915. He embarked aboard the Port Macquarie on November 16th . He served in France with the 23rd Infantry Battalion before being transferred to the 2nd Division Ammunition Column as a driver. While on leave in England he contracted an illness before he went absent without leave in May 1918. He was declared an illegal absentee and when he was apprehended in April 1919 he was charged with desertion and sentenced to 12 months detention. During his absence he had married Pauline Broadhurst in London on September 18th 1918. His sentence was remitted from July 1919 and he was discharged in England on December 14th 1919.
His brothers Septimus , Richard and Ivo also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
