John Henry Davis (SN 6257) born in Ballarat was a 23 year old fishmonger when he enlisted on July 13th 1916. Assigned to the 8th Battalion his unit embarked from Melbourne aboard the Euripides on September 11th. On September 7th 1918 he was wounded in action, gassed. After hostilities ceased, and while awaiting return to Australia, he was absent without leave for three weeks, for which he was punished. He returned home on the Nestor reaching Melbourne on July 2nd 1919 and discharged on August 9th.
His brothers Charles, Frank and David also served in the AIF and are honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
