David Harold Davis was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 21st Battalion, 19th Reinforcement on 28 February 1917. He gave his age at the time as 18.
After a series of disciplinary actions, one of which resulting in a Court Martial, it was discovered that David was underage upon enlistment and returned to Australia on the Euripides, reaching Melbourne on March 21st 1918. This, however, did not stop him from attempting to re-enlist under the name of John Henry Bunting. On December 3rd 1918 he was discharged, æservices no longer required'.
