Biography

Arthur William Yates (SN 290) was born in Ballarat and attended the Golden Point and Dana Street State Schools. He was a 23 year old accountant at the time of his enlistment on February 8th 1915. He joined the 22nd Infantry Battalion and embarked on the Ulysses from Melbourne on May 10th, reaching France in March 1916. On August 2nd 1917 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, but just a week later on August 9th 1916 he was killed in action at Pozieres. He is buried at Puchevillers British Cemetery, France. Like his brothers George and Harold he is named on the Golden Point and Dana Street State Schools honour boards.

His three brothers, George, Harold, and Thomas all served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
Harold was killed 10 days earlier than Arthur.
