Biography

Harold Stanley Yates (SN 781) was born in Ballarat and attended the Golden Point and Dana Street State Schools. He was a 25 year old storeman when he enlisted on January 20th 1915. He was posted to the 21st Battalion and he embarked from Melbourne on the 8th May on Ulysses . Later he was promoted to Corporal. On July 31st 1916 he was killed in action near Pozieres. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux in France. Like his brothers Arthur and George he is named on the honour boards of the Golden Point and Dana Street State Schools.

His three brothers, Arthur, George, Thomas also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
His brother Arthur was killed 10 days later than Harold.
