Harold Stanley Yates (SN 781) was born in Ballarat and attended the Golden Point and Dana Street State Schools. He was a 25 year old storeman when he enlisted on January 20th 1915. He was posted to the 21st Battalion with which he embarked from Melbourne on May 8th on board Ulysses . He served at Gallipoli before being posted to France in March 1916 where he was promoted to Corporal. On July 31st 1916 he was killed in action near Pozieres. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux in France. Like his brothers Arthur and George, he is named on the honour boards of the Golden Point and Dana Street State Schools.
His three brothers, Arthur, who was killed in action ten days after Harold, George and Thomas also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
