George Frederick Yates (SN 4229) enlisted in August 1915 as a 22 year old railway employee. He embarked in March 1916 on the Wiltshire and in November he joined the 2nd Division Base Depot in France. A month later he was transferred to the 24th Battalion with whom he was serving when he was wounded in action on May 3rd 1917. He suffered gunshot wounds to his right arm and back and was evacuated to hospital in England. His recovery was slow but he eventually returned safely, once again aboard the Wiltshire to Australia, disembarking at Melbourne on May 29th 1919.
Like his brothers Arthur and Harold, he is honoured on the Golden Point and Dana Street State Schools honour boards.
His three brothers, Arthur, Harold, Thomas also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
