Alfred Gordon Primrose was born in Ballarat and was a Vulcaniser living in Kensington, Victoria when he enlisted in the March 1917 Reinforcements on 23 November 1916 at the age of 30 as a 2nd Air Mechanic. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A74 Marathon on 10 May 1917. He proceeded to France in November of 1917, where he was reassigned to the 2nd Squadron Australian Flying Corps and was awarded a promotion to Temporary 1st Air Mechanic on 8 February 1919. According to his records he completed his tour of duty without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia aboard the Beltana.
He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number V356437.
His brother Allan also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue. Two nephews are also honoured with trees in the Avenue, Leslie who was killed in action in June 1918 and George.
