Edward William John Provis (SN 1258) was born in Waterloo near Beaufort but enlisted in Albert Park on August 20th 1914. The 29 year old, married labourer was posted to the 6th Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, and left Melbourne on board the Shropshire in October 1914. His record notes that he 'Did not land at Anzac' but he joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in April 1915, then arrived in France in March 1916. Apart from several months in hospital suffering from 'Dental Caries' (tooth decay) his overseas service appears to have passed relatively uneventfully. He returned to Australia on board the Kasir-i-Hind and disembarked in Melbourne in November 1918. He was discharged from the AIF on January 24th 1919.
He is one of four brothers who served in the AIF. Edward, Robert, Francis and Cecil are all honoured with adjacent trees in the Avenue.
