Biography

Francis Joshua Provis (SN 2410) was born at Waterloo near Beaufort where he attended the local state school. He was an 18 year old clerk when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 5th 1915 with the permission of his mother, Helena. Posted to the 8th Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne in mid July on board the Demosthenes. He saw action at Gallipoli for the final month of that campaign then, after three months in Egypt he was transferred to the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade for service in France. On October 10th 1916 he was killed in action and is buried in the Bedford House Cemetery in Belgium.

He is one of four brothers who served in the AIF. Edward, Robert, Francis and Cecil are all honoured with adjacent trees in the Avenue.
