Biography

Cecil Arthur Louis Provis (SN 2234) was born in Ballarat but enlisted in Melbourne on April 21st 1915. The 18 year old clerk left Melbourne on board the Wandilla with the 6th Battalion in June. He served in Gallipoli until the end of the campaign, then was transferred to the 58th Battalion then the 60th Battalion and promoted to Sergeant while serving in Egypt. He was wounded in action in September 1918 and evacuated to England. He returned to Australia on board the City of Exeter, disembarking in Melbourne in March 1919 and was discharged on April 24th 1919.

He re-enlisted (SN 1951) with the Australian Naval and Military Expedition Force on November 6th 1919 and was posted to Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. His responsibilities appear to have been mainly administrative and he was appointed honorary Company Sergeant Major in July 1920. Although he enlisted for a minimum of two years, his record does not indicate when he was finally discharged.

He is one of four brothers who served in the AIF. Edward, Robert, Francis and Cecil are all honoured with adjacent trees in the Avenue.
